BBC has a wonderful internet site. I enjoy the variety of contributions on a multitude of topics with a global coverage. For instance, I like to listen to reporting religion, http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/reporting_religion.shtml, a weekly radio programme documenting how religious events contribute to shape the world. Recently I also liked http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/timeline/1900.shtml giving a “women’s timeline” starting in 1900: It’s amazing to see short sequences of the British and European society, and listen to comments on the social position of women and the struggle for the recognition of women’s rights over the last hundred years.
J’aime bien le site http://www.rue89.com/. Il se présente d’abord comme un journal sur internet, comportant en plus d’une bonne couverture de l’actualité française une large section internationale. Sur le même site, on trouve une série de blogs originaux et variés, par exemple «Coulisses de Bruxelles», narrant les grandes et les petites histoires qui font l’Europe, ou le carnet de Colette Braeckman, journaliste belge, suivant de près l’actualité africaine. Le site comporte aussi les adresses d’une belle série de journaux internationaux, certains existant uniquement en version internet, d’autres bien connus par leur version papier.
Worldmapper is a collection of world maps, where territories are re-sized on each map according to the subject of interest. At http://worldmapper.sasi.group.shef.ac.uk there are approximately 600 world maps, showing the size of regions and countries according to their territory, population, food production, poverty, consumption of energy, health, religion, etc. I like this address because it gives a great visual information: a good map sometimes provides a better overview than a page of text.
